In order to prepare students to contribute to the necessary transformation towards sustainability after graduation, all degree programs must integrate the sustainability aspects into mandatory modules. The universities should ensure that no student leaves the university without relevant sustainability knowledge. Based on a recent study conducted by the author in 2022/2023, the article uses the example of the 11 public universities that exist in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate to show the extent to which this has been implemented so far. Best practice examples of sustainability-related study programs are shown and further possibilities for integrating sustainability into universities are presented. Based on the Whole-Institution-Approach the interfaces from teaching to sustainable operation and research for sustainability will also be discussed. Special attention will be given to t to the overall institutional approach to the integration of sustainability at the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld. For the past 6 years, the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld has been the best university in Germany in the international UI GreenMetric ranking and is ranked third worldwide out of 1183 participating universities from 84 countries in 2023. Finally transferable recommendations for implementing sustainability in universities are derived, based on the study in Rhineland-Palatinate.
