Nudging as a Tool to Raise Awareness for ESD among Distance Learning Students Using the Example of Learning with Digital Study Materials
摘要
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a fundamental component of the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As part of ESD, it is essential to develop the competence to think and act sustainably. This competence is increasingly being integrated into higher education. Distance learners, by virtue of their professional activities, are predestined to practice and immediately apply the ESD competence they learn and to deal with future challenges. The concept of nudging can be used to develop this ESD competence. Nudging has been successfully applied in the fields of sustainable food and slow fashion. Thaler and Sunstein (Nudge: improving decisions about health, wealth, and happiness. Penguin, 2009) described the method of nudging people to make the right choices and change their behavior, e.g. to be more environmentally conscious. The purpose of this study is to identify effective nudges that promote sustainable behavior among distance learning students. The study attempts to use nudges to motivate students to abandon the use of printed learning materials and instead adopt more sustainable practices. To answer the research question, qualitative interviews were conducted following the Critical Incident Technique to investigate effective nudges to reduce the use of paper-based study materials and to increase awareness of ESD. The results showed that nudges with relevant information were most effective, with their impact influenced by demographic factors such as age and study context.
