TUM Nexus Lab (Nexus@TUM): TUM as a Frontrunner University with a Targeted Research and Teaching Agenda on the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus

The triple planetary crisis refers to three main interlinked issues that humanity currently faces: (1) climate change, (2) pollution, and (3) biodiversity loss. As they are interlinked, these three issues require approaches integrating and aligning multiple (disciplinary) perspectives. How to formulate these remains largely unknown and untested. In light of this quandary, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has developed the cross-school initiative TUM Nexus Lab (Nexus@TUM) research and teaching agenda, expanding the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus approach, beside other university-wide programs. This article describes how and why this WEF Nexus agenda was derived and justifies the key components of this. Using a comparative review of similar agendas around the globe, we posit that TUM is an academic frontrunner university in sustainability education worldwide. Its educational choices highlight how integrated planning of the sectors water, energy and food and other relevant sectors can enable more efficient resource use, thus reducing GHG emissions—climate mitigation—and support climate adaptation in an integrated manner. Thus, the Nexus approach can enhance water, energy and food security integrally with social security. In its action- and solution-oriented transdisciplinary approach, the initiative targets resource-stressed regions. Nexus@TUM builds on an environmental engineering perspective to integrate social, governance and economic aspects. It further acknowledges that the issue at hand pertains equally to contexts in developing as in developed economies, and makes a concerted effort to train future Nexus managers as transformational leaders.
