Hennig published seminal works in 1950 (in German) and in 1966 (in English), the latter of which created more attention. Cladistics provided quantitative methods of putting phylogeny back into classification, filling in the missing perspective from phenetics, but it did so also at a cost: It emphasized only descent and ignored evolutionary divergence. Over the decades of the 1970s and 1980s, much discussion ensued on the proper approaches to botanical classification, which, combined with DNA data, eventually led to the explosion of phylogenetic methods in the 1990s.
