Science Oriented Towards Life: Ilse Seglow and Her Doctoral Thesis on the Society of Actors
摘要
Norbert Elias and Karl Mannheim worked closely together. Most knowledge about the cooperation between them is based on later descriptions. The practical division of labour at the Frankfurt chair from 1930 to 1933 has yet to be fully documented. So far, investigations into this formative period contain significant speculative elements. This chapter presents and examines a new source for research, particularly from the feminist perspective. The preparatory work for her doctoral thesis has emerged from the depths of Ilse Seglow’s estate. In her study of actor society, she observes a practical empirical field and tries to connect it with a general theory of society. Seglow belonged to the first generation of scientists who Elias influenced. Her thesis concepts document the preliminary status of the figurative research program. On an organisational level, her files show what arrangements were made with Mannheim and Elias. It is captivating to observe how the gender balance is being pursued here in agreement with both theorists at that early time.
