Primary preventive services for children and the primary care management of acute and chronic conditions were negatively affected by re-prioritization of care during the COVID-19 pandemic. The swift shift in telehealth was amplified to minimize the pandemic’s disruptive effects on access to care to promote child health (Matenge et al., Family Practice. 39:747–761, 2022). During this period, healthcare providers became more aware of unmet holistic health needs and more knowledgeable about health disparities in the pediatric population. Results of the long-term health impacts related to pediatric primary care service disruptions are still being uncovered. More research is needed to consider a primary care redesign that makes health services more equitable and responsive to the health needs of children and their families, particularly in public health emergencies.
