The COVID-19 pandemic shone a critical light on existing and widening inequities in food access in the United States. The pandemic posed unforeseen challenges to individuals, providers, systems, and institutions. Despite these challenges, healthcare providers caring for the most under-resourced and marginalized communities responded in an unprecedented manner. The social ecological framework demonstrates the multi-level impact of food insecurity and the corresponding opportunities to provide emergency programming and interventions across communities, institutions, and policies. During the pandemic, pediatric providers engaged at each of these levels, validating their critical role in the food security safety net.
