Although data on COVID-19 infections in children is limited, the disease and pandemic’s impact on children’s health and social well-being was unparalleled. As of the official declaration of the pandemic endpoint on May 11, 2023, approximately 15.6 million children (17.9% of all cases) had tested positive for COVID-19 since April 2020 (American Academy of Pediatrics, Children and COVID-19: state-level data report, American Academy of Pediatrics, 2023). Among these children are those with special health care needs who require additional medical care and support, which can be challenging during a pandemic. This chapter outlines the impact COVID-19 had on children and youth with special health care needs during and after the COVID-19 pandemic and for future medical crises.
