AI pervades all human activities, yet its benefits for the biggest part of the planet are still out of reach. This paper argues that the way to change is to involve civil society organizations in developing and deploying the AI. A timid attempt to do so is included in the first law on AI, that is European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act, which invites that deployers of AI systems to consult and collaborate with the civil society in making AI compliant with fundamental rights. As small advancement as it is, it opens the door to the possibilities to make AI much more human-centric and respondent to the real needs of communities where these systems would be deployed. This trend of involving civil society corresponds to the emerging trend of public-private-people partnerships as an alternative to public-private partnerships and could contribute to make AI a Global Public Good, that is, a good accessible to everyone everywhere and hence bring the benefits of the AI not only to the Global North, but also to the Global South.
