Oxidative stress and bacterial infection are the factors that complicate the wound healing process. Antioxidants such as glutathione (GSH) and natural antibiotics (allicin) have shown promise in aiding wound healing by neutralizing excessive ROS and fighting bacterial infections, respectively. However, there is controversy over the interaction between GSH and allicin and their potential positive or negative effects on wound healing. This review aims to summarize the current knowledge and studies on GSH and allicin and their interaction in terms of their antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Hence, this review demonstrated the combination of GSH and allicin will increase the antioxidant potentials of the cells, but it is still depending on the cell sensitivity towards allicin. However, the antibacterial properties of allicin had been reduced through the interaction with the SH-group of GSH. In conclusion, the optimum concentration for the combination of GSH and allicin should be studied to further confirm its potential in wound dressing application.
