This chapter seeks to explore the recent military coups that have occurred across the Sahel region of Africa and examine the fragility of democracy in the region. Using Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Sudan as case studies, an analysis will be conducted about the events leading up to the recent wave of military coups, the deteriorating human rights situations in those countries, increasing threats of terrorism from the Sahel, and the rising influence of Russia in the region with its destabilizing effects. And no discussion about Russia and its increasing presence in Africa can happen without also mentioning the use of private mercenaries and companies like Wagner. A theoretical foundation will also be provided that will offer potential explanations for why democracy has struggled to take hold in that part of Africa since the end of European colonialism and why military coups have unfortunately been common occurrences in the Sahel as well. Can the cycle of democratic governments collapsing and military coups resulting in dictatorships and military juntas ever be broken for these African nations?
