Covid-19 has been a monumentally significant disease, and the Anthropocene itself can be viewed as an ecological and political disease. Thus, in this chapter, we shall continue to explore the questions with which Covid-19 presents us—questions both old and new. Old: how ought we to deal with a public health phenomenon, when similar health crises have been seen repeatedly throughout history, at least since the emergence of civilizations, and the mixing of species to produce livestock? New: while the history of modernity has, up until now, seemed to go hand in hand with progress—in science, technology, morals, the institution of democracy, etc.—suddenly, we are faced with an obstacle, which gives us cause to doubt our level of progress. A simple virus has enfeebled us in all respects: claiming the lives of people of all ages, and leaving thousands in a much-weakened state of health in the long run; overwhelming our care structures; disrupting our economy; but also upsetting our ways of life, and even our way of thinking—politically—our ability to live together.
