Adaptability of UN SDGs by Worldwide Fashion Brands

The fashion industry has always topped in terms of pollution and impact on the globe, which includes emission of greenhouse gases, demanding high water exhausting industry. These aspects make us ask “If fashion is sustainable for the future?” The fashion industry can be more sensible of the issues arising. Sustainability and sustainable development have gained attention all over the globe to avoid over-utilization of resources. The UN advocated the Sustainable Development Goals in the year 2015 to make an assurance that the people will enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. The new objectives of economic, social, and environmental developments such as environmental protection and economic growth are demonstrated by the SDGs. In this, SDG 12 mentions Responsible consumption and production, and this is where fashion brands come into picture. Due to the increased buying habits of customers, the fashion industry is not able to ascertain the future impacts clearly, which leads to irresponsible production and consumption. In this regard, it becomes essential to inculcate the best practices in these brands to be more responsible in production so that the consumption pattern can be changed. Many brands like Zara, Uniqlo, and Gant are doing many activities in this regard. With the increasing awareness of sustainability among the people , the fashion sector will follow sustainable measures. By acknowledging all these situations, there has been relatively little byway of increased regulations specific to the fashion industry to encourage a change in standard practices. Fashion and textile industries require more corporate and socially responsible activities that would propel SDGs. In this chapter, we will discuss the various UN SDG principles followed by fashion brands and other textile industries in India and other countries. The chapter will also throw light on the best practices that can be followed for achieving SDG 12.
