Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from Endophytes: Their Role in Biocontrol of Phytopathogens

As the global population approaches 10 billion by 2050, ensuring food security amidst the challenges of crop losses caused by bacterial and fungal pathogens becomes critical. Microbial endophytes, particularly bacteria and fungi, have emerged as sustainable solutions for plant health and crop protection. Endophytes produce bioactive compounds, including Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which are pivotal in plant growth promotion, biocontrol of pathogens, and pest management. VOCs, a diverse group of small signaling molecules, exhibit antimicrobial properties and interact with the soil and plant microbiomes to enhance nutrient uptake, induce systemic resistance, and mitigate abiotic stresses. This chapter highlights the multifaceted roles of VOCs in agriculture, such as promoting root development, suppressing pathogens, and reducing reliance on chemical pesticides. Additionally, specific VOCs like hydrogen cyanide, 2-phenylethanol, and dimethyl disulfide show potential as biocontrol agents against plant pathogens. The integration of VOC-based strategies in agricultural practices offers an environmentally friendly approach to sustainable crop production. Future research is essential to fully harness the potential of VOCs, paving the way for innovative and effective agricultural management technique.
