Metaphysics has been chasing after a form of higher Being as have spiritual traditions. From Neoplatonism’s pulsing Godhead to Emmanuel Levinas’ “trace” the focus of this chase is mediated by various constructs imposed on the mind, whether through logic, theology, language, mathematics, or thought, even bodily posture and movement. This essay examines East and West approaches to this search, focusing particularly on various kinds of openings to this higher Being, whether as epiphany in its various understandings or as a phenomenological intuition. To this extent one could also approach nonhuman nature as an entrance to Being by way of the poetics of deep structure as introduced from the East to the West, so that “deeper” replaces “higher.”
