The purpose of this chapter is to understand the ways in which particular Italian spaces, and the networks these spaces promoted and cultivated, offered the women authors of the Medieval Towns series opportunities to develop their careers. Here, I argue the critical importance of spaces and cultural connections in Italy in fostering advantageous publishing conditions, scholarly guidebook expertise, intellectual engagement, and the construction of a professional and intellectual way of life for women guidebook producers and their wider social circles. In doing so, this chapter naturally extends upon the importance of networks and the intellectual aristocracy established in Chapter 5 , however, it redirects the primary focus away from networks to spaces in order to better understand the conditions under which these networks flourished and the impact of certain spaces in Italy on cultural production. Furthermore, this chapter argues for a shift in perspective—moving the focus away from the geographic locale of Britain—to argue that the British intellectual elite can be understood as a part of a larger transcontinental cultural elite, a group which flourished in Italy.

摘要
