For centuries, edible mushrooms have been esteemed globally for their therapeutic properties in preventing and treating various illnesses. This chapter delves into the myriad benefits of bioactive compounds and metabolites present in mushrooms, focusing particularly on their role in promoting digestive health. Traditional Eastern and other traditional medicine practices have long recognized the therapeutic properties of certain mushroom varieties to digestive health, which are now also acknowledged in Western medicine. It includes shiitake (Lentinula edodes), reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus), maitake (Grifola frondosa), oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus), turkey tail (Trametes versicolor), chaga (Inonotus obliquus), button mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus), and others. These mushrooms are nutrient-dense, packed with protein, polysaccharides (primarily β-glucans), essential minerals (including selenium, iron, and phosphorus), and vitamins (such as ergosterol, riboflavin, thiamin, niacin, and ascorbic acid). Additionally, they contain a wealth of secondary metabolites like terpenoids, alkaloids, sesquiterpenes, polyphenolic compounds, lactones, and sterols. These bioactive compounds and metabolites confer numerous health benefits, including therapeutic effects against digestive ailments. The high fiber content in mushrooms not only promotes digestion but also supports healthy gut microbiota, which is crucial for maintaining the immune system and preventing gastrointestinal diseases. Furthermore, recent research highlights the promising potential of nanoparticles of β-glucans derived from edible mushrooms. These nanoparticles, when combined with drug delivery systems, exhibit a synergistic effect that offers new possibilities for the development of nanomedicines, particularly in cancer treatment. This chapter discusses how the beneficial resources from these edible mushroom species can be harnessed for better digestive health and overall well-being.
