Edible mushrooms are a disparate class of fungi which are consumed worldwide for their nutritious and potentially healthy benefits. Edible mushrooms have been reported to protect against and alleviate various respiratory diseases, including asthma, lung infections, pulmonary sepsis, and potential effects of COVID-19. This chapter aims to discuss edible mushrooms as sources of nutraceuticals for protecting against and alleviating respiratory diseases. While many edible mushrooms are considered safe and even beneficial for human health, it is essential to distinguish them from toxic varieties, as some mushrooms can be harmful or even deadly if ingested. Certain mushrooms, such as Reishi and Shiitake, have been researched for their potential immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, which could be beneficial for respiratory health. It is important to ensure that the mushrooms consumed are properly identified and prepared. Some people may be allergic to certain mushrooms, traversing to respiratory manifestations, like wheezing, coughing, or shortness of breath. In rare cases, exposure to mold spores on improperly stored or spoiled mushrooms could trigger respiratory issues in sensitive individuals. Additionally, inhaling mushroom spores from the environment, such as during the cultivation process, could potentially lead to respiratory irritation in susceptible individuals. Proper handling, cleaning, and cooking of mushrooms are essential to minimize any potential risks. If an individual already has breathing issues or problems, it is advantageous to check with a healthcare professional prior to introducing new foods into their diet, including edible mushrooms. When consumed responsibly and with proper attention to individual health conditions, edible mushrooms can be a nutritious and safe addition to a balanced diet.
