Edible and medicinal mushrooms are being promoted as a potent source of antiparasitic action due to their high phytochemical content. Mushrooms have a visible and harvestable fruiting body that can be found either above or below ground. Mushrooms are classified as macrofungi. Numerous investigations have demonstrated the potential of chemicals present in both edible and medicinal mushrooms, as well as raw extracts from these species, to have potent antiparasitic activities. This chapter provides a review of antiparasitic compounds derived from edible mushrooms, including those that target parasitic protozoa like Leishmania, Trypanosoma, and Plasmodium. These parasites are known to transmit neglected tropical diseases. The text provides a detailed account and categorization of diseases and parasitic organisms, along with an analysis of the properties that make natural compounds obtained from edible mushrooms effective against parasites.
