Near-peer education is an innovative teaching strategy where learners are taught by near-peer teachers (other students or trainees who have recently mastered a skill) as opposed to the more traditional educational approach using expert teachers. Near-peer education can be utilized where teaching resources are limited or to gain benefits from this unique teaching dynamic. Near-peer teachers relearn content and improve upon their teaching skills, while near-peer learners advance their abilities facilitated through social and cognitive congruence between teacher and learner. Near-peer education has been applied successfully to learning multiple point-of-care ultrasound examinations and protocols and has been studied on an international scope in a variety of learner populations, primarily at the undergraduate and graduate medical education levels. The available literature, although limited, suggests that near-peer education is effective for learning, enjoyable for teachers and learners, and efficient in resource utilization. In this chapter, we explore the literature characterizing the benefits of near-peer education in point-of-care ultrasound. We also describe educational programs which have been successful in implementing near-pear education. Finally, we provide practical insights and guidance that can be used for successful implementation of near-peer education into point-of-care ultrasound programs. Highlighted best practices include commitment from relevant stakeholders, preparation of near-peer teachers in content and teaching skills, support of near-peer teachers during teaching sessions, and attention to learner and programmatic assessment for iterative change.
