Mitral and tricuspid regurgitation are conditions in which there is incomplete coaptation of the valve leaflets, leading to retrograde flow of blood from the ventricle to the atrium. Both can be a result of a variety of etiologies. The first indication of the presence of valvular insufficiency is an appreciable regurgitant jet seen with color Doppler. Vena contracta (VC), jet density, and pressure half-density can be used to characterize a regurgitant jet.
