This study identifies and characterizes references to Pierre Varignon’s work in the Encyclopédie and in Jean Le Rond D’Alembert’s Traité de dynamique (1743, 1758). It provides an overview, albeit partial, of Varignon’s 18th-century followers and shows the importance of his work on statics and dynamics, particularly in D’Alembert’s works. It also suggests a critical reading of D’Alembert on the foundations of Varignon’s mechanics, and that the presence of Varignon’s work in D’Alembert’s writings may not be unrelated to his scientific training.
