At the meeting of the Académie des sciences on 16 February 1692, Pierre Varignon presented a transmutation method for squaring any (higher) parabola and provided two demonstrations for this method at the meetings of 29 March and 9 April. Records survive of both these demonstrations. In this paper, we compare Varignon’s method of transmutation with a number of older methods, from the time of Roberval (1646) through to Leibniz (1673). In addition, we address the question as to how these results and methods were conveyed to other scholars up to the end of the 1690s, and in part also up to the beginning of the next century.

摘要

At the meeting of the Académie des sciences on 16 February 1692, Pierre Varignon presented a transmutation method for squaring any (higher) parabola and provided two demonstrations for this method at the meetings of 29 March and 9 April. Records survive of both these demonstrations. In this paper, we compare Varignon’s method of transmutation with a number of older methods, from the time of Roberval (1646) through to Leibniz (1673). In addition, we address the question as to how these results and methods were conveyed to other scholars up to the end of the 1690s, and in part also up to the beginning of the next century.
