Integrating a GIS Enhanced Security System in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN): A Geospatial Deployment Approach

Nowadays, the gathered information from in-situ Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) over embedded systems is a crucial issue because WSNs offer details on the variables of interest for field researchers. These WSNs have been integrated into a Geographic Information System (GIS) to measure PH, temperature, light, and ultraviolet rays inside the cavern and the water in urban Cenotes in Cancun, Quintana Roo. It is important to consider the integrity of the information obtained from WSNs, and the security and protection of the WSN system. As mentioned, any WSN connects to different networking devices such as mobile users, central computers, remote database servers, and the Cloud. WSN uses the mobile technology GSM/GPRS to send information about research variables of interest to these devices. Because of the WSN connectivity to the Internet is possible by a mobile telephony module to send data sensor data into a remote database manager server, typically based on a Raspberry Pi 3 computer. This experimental Embedded Network Security System (ENSS) offers a cybersecurity solution to protect mobile users, central computers, remote database servers, and the Cloud from any direct attack against the WSN, especially the Rasp-berry Pi 3 computer. Therefore, as a scope, we present the deployment of a real-time ENSS on a Raspberry Pi 3 computer using security protocols through a Virtual Private Network (VPN), Secure Shell (SSH), and a Firewall as well to protect in-situ data from potential cybernetic attacks.
