Geospatial Intelligence for Circular Economy in Mexico City

The Circular Economy is a proposal for a new economic model based on three principles: So, in a circular economy, products and materials remain in use through maintenance, reuse, refurbishment, remanufacturing, recycling, etc. We wanted to set a baseline of companies that perform circular economy activities in México City and map the results. We found a way to relate these activities with officially recognized economic activities in the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS). Then, we used its coding system to locate companies in the National Statistical Directory of Economic Units geodatabase (DENUE-2023). Of the 1086 economic activities recognized in the NAICS, 97 are related to the circular economy activities (that fit primarily with the second and third principles). The 97 codes were reorganized into six new categories: reuse, repair, refurbish, repurpose, recycle, and recover. Then, these codes were used to filter DENUE-2023 and map micro, small, and medium-sized companies in each R-category in Mexico City. Of 475,331 records in Mexico City, only 47,339 could be located in an R-category. The repair category is the largest, with more than 50% of businesses (25,197). There are 10,276 economic units dedicated to refurbishing (21.7%), followed by reusing companies with 9,482 establishments (20%); 2,196 businesses dedicated to recycling (4.6%), 138 economic units in the “repurpose” category (0.3%), and only 50 establishments (0.1%) in the recovery category. Maps show the spatial distribution of these companies.
