As the call for efficient assessment tools in Arabic language education grows, releasing an automatic scoring system to mark students’ dissertations has attracted the scholars’ attention. Such tools can considerably reduce teachers’ time and effort spent on the scoring task due to the growing number of students in different schools and universities. Therefore, research in this field has been started since the second decade of the twenty-first century while various works of Automatic Essay Scoring (AES) have been done. However, most of these works have focused on languages like English and German, while working on other languages such as Arabic is still limited. This scoping review provides a comprehensive overview of automatic Arabic essay scoring following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines while using the most relevant online bibliographic databases, namely ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of science.
