Due to the clear efficacy of clinical management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in children, which in some cases can be done with simple lifestyle changes, surgery is one of the last—if not the last—resort to treat patients with GERD; thus, only a small percentage of children with GERD are referred to surgical treatment. In retrospective studies, the patient’s age was an important factor in surgery indication: only 4% of children under 1 year old needed surgical management of the disease, while 20% of older patients were subjected to surgery.
