Congenital anomalies affect about 5% of live births worldwide, being one of the primary causes of perinatal deaths in Brazil. Studies show that they are related to 10–33% of perinatal mortality cases. Among the congenital anomalies, craniofacial disorders constitute a diverse and complex group of diseases, which includes isolated or multiple anomalies with or without genetic etiology. Craniofacial anomalies prevalence varies according to geographic region and ethnicity. Undoubtedly, cleft lip and palate constitutes the most frequent examples, which may occur in up to 1 in every 650 newborns. This means the birth of a patient with this anomaly every 2.5 min in the world.
