Rectal cancer is the second most common cancer in the large intestine, representing 28%, after only proximal colon cancers, representing 42%. Nearly 50 thousand Americans are diagnosed with rectal cancer annually. In the world, it is alone the eighth most common cancer. In 2020, 3.8% of all new cancers were in the rectum, approximately 732 thousand people. Of the new deaths, rectum cancer represented 3.4% of the total deaths, almost 340 thousand. Between 2003 and 2012, rectal cancer incidence in the United States declined by 2.2% per year, with more significant declines among men compared to women and Caucasians compared with Afro-Americans.
