Head and neck malignancies consist mainly of tumors that originate in the upper aerodigestive tract, including the facial area and sinuses, nasal cavity, oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, thyroid, and trachea. These can arise from any structure of this area, such as, but not limited to, skin, mucosa, major and minor salivary glands, nerves, muscle, bone, blood, and lymphatic vessels, as shown in Fig. 40.1. Tumors originating intracranially, such as central nervous system (CNS) tumors, are not included.
