Surgical infection is any type of infection that affects surgical patients. The most prevalent are surgical site infections, urinary and bloodstream catheter-related infections, hospital-acquired pneumonia, and ventilator-associated pneumonia. Postoperative infections have a negative impact on the patient’s prognosis, increasing the rates of morbidity, mortality, and hospital costs. Most of these infections are preventable, and prevention is a huge concern of the hospital’s multidisciplinary team.
