Lower gastrointestinal bleeding (LGIB) refers to any blood loss originating from a site distant to the ligament of Treitz, as it is an important cause of hospital admission, morbidity, and mortality. A mortality rate can reach 20% if associated with aggravating factors such as age >60 years, systemic diseases, the need for surgery, and recent stress (trauma, sepsis, surgery). It ceases spontaneously in 90% of cases but can lead to multiple complications, such as myocardial infarction.
