Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating disease that typically presents after trauma and is due to mechanisms such as compression, shearing forces, transection, and penetrating injury. The spinal column receives support and stability primarily from the vertebrae. Additional support is provided through various ligaments, soft tissues, and ribs. The cervical spine is the most commonly injured segment due to its increased mobility. Injury typically involves the spinal cord itself, but can also include the exiting nerve roots and lower spinal nerve roots (e.g., cauda equina).
