The gyroscope can be a fascinating toy. You can buy one on the internet for around ten dollars. It gives a practical appreciation of angular momentum. The simulations throughout this book are intended to help you to visualise some difficult concepts. However those simulations cannot let you feel the torque of a real gyroscope. When you change the angle of the axis, you will feel torque about an axis perpendicular to it. The gyroscope will seem to be trying to twist out of your hands. If the gyroscope is suspended from a string, attached to one end of the axis, the axis will remain horizontal while the gyroscope turns steadily about a vertical axis. The gyroscope is ‘precessing’. As well as precessing, gyroscopes can perform ‘nutation’, cyclic ‘wobbling’ of the axis. But that will not be considered here.
