Any analytical effort to study environmental mixtures in epidemiologic studies should begin with a thorough characterization of the exposure. This is required to both identifying data-specific complexities that can inform the adequate choice of subsequent analytical tools and providing some preliminary results of public health interest such as the presence of recurrent patterns of exposures. This chapter describes the main analytical steps of this mixture characterization phase, including data preprocessing, correlation analysis, and principal component analysis.
