The Cornerstone: Why Governance Is the Foundation of Responsible Investing

Few practices are as venerable as CEO succession. So why does handing the reins to new leadership at prestigious companies often devolve into drama and controversy? The fact is, governance—the G in ESG—gets short shrift in the responsible investing discussion, and this is unwise. If anything, governance is the one element that shapes every part of a company’s operations, culture, strategy, and ultimately, value. And it’s high time that investors understand the G’s importance in addressing polycrises and the changing priorities of a younger generations. In this chapter, I highlight a few choice case studies in CEO succession to illustrate the forces at play in corporate governance.
