For decades, investing was a relatively straightforward enterprise—you analyzed the fortunes of companies, determined their potential risks and rewards, and put your capital to work accordingly. In the twenty-first century, this approach isn’t enough. With the world whipsawed by polycrises, investors must manage their assets more responsibly. This means aligning their portfolios with their values and mitigating the perils of a world undergoing shifts ranging from climate change to socioeconomic upheaval to pandemics. In this chapter, I chart the course of responsible investing from its origins to the multi-trillion-dollar ESG industry of the 2020s. And I introduce readers to breakthrough concepts such as tapping unorthodox, non-financial data to select assets and the need to invest generationally over the long term.
