At Lloyd International Honors College at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) we cultivate our students’ potential as powerful life performer-learners. We do this in a number of ways, including as part of teaching specific content in the sciences, humanities, and the arts. By ‘performer-learners’ we are referring to our ability as human beings to develop emotionally/artistically/intellectually and organize environments for continued growth and learning for all (Holzman, 2017; Perone, Scene 1, this volume). In other words, we teach life skills beyond specific content (such as the number of ounces in a liter or the capital of Italy) to include how we might imagine, look at, learn, and do things moment-by-moment in new and different ways. Our emphasis on cultivating life performer-learners is not limited to our students; we encourage faculty, staff, and community partners to become even more powerful learners by focusing on human development, which we define as the increased capacity to recognize opportunities and build with them. We intentionally seek to create empowering learning environments, methodologically, through play, experimenting, and performing (which is literally our college’s motto: Ludite, Explorate, Perficite). Learning to perform different roles, such as “student” or “teacher,” students, faculty, and staff develop capacities to take on and create new and different performances in life. In this scene, we explore the history of carrying out (succeeding and failing) the college’s motto as part of a broader global community, creating, in the words of Ludwig Wittgenstein, “new forms of life” (East Side Institute, 2023).
