I have taught Teacher as Performer to undergraduate students since 2017. We begin every class with an activity that supports us to see each other beyond the traditional roles of student and teacher and to perform our teaching and learning as an ensemble. As with the exercise described above, we do things that are a bit weird or awkward like “looking people in the eye” in a virtual environment! It is not actually possible to do it; in fact, it is ridiculous given the technological constraints, and yet doing the performance of eye contact transforms the environment. The reminder that we are here together is particularly important given we often do not look at our classmates even when we are in person—perhaps only seeing their profiles or the backs of their heads. This brief, awkward, and intimate activity is the beginning of a semester-long process of creating new performances of teaching and learning.
