Spring 2020: Suddenly, the coronavirus pandemic was the number one topic of conversation. With lockdowns, panic-buying and short-time work, it brutally broke into everyday life. Under normal circumstances, diseases are a topic confined to the waiting room of doctor’s offices; now, there was hardly a conversation that didn’t touch on Corona. The prospect of contracting the life-threatening virus forced everyone to inform and protect themselves. You couldn’t simply ignore COVID-19. For the media, the pandemic was a hit: a fresh topic, a plague that could hit anyone. The global significance, coupled with the constant media bombardment, made COVID-19 a societal event, brought new stars and villains to the fore, and led to demonstrations and police operations.
