The fifth chapter, We Thought Europe Was a Nice Place: Homing on the Move, explores home-making practices along migratory routes. The research investigates how migrants develop survival strategies and recreate a home’s sensations and material aspects while on the move. Since many undocumented journeys extend over several years, migrants engage in various home-making practices to address their needs. In their quest for a new home, migrants inhabit both institutional camps—established as specific confinement apparatuses—and counter-camps, which are clandestine, autonomous and semi-hidden living arrangements in public spaces. Thus, homing is framed as a fundamental component of mobility and debordering tactics. The chapter also presents safe houses, which are part of hospitality practices organized by grassroots solidarity networks or managed by fellow nationals. Conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, this section includes reflections on the discriminatory aspects of emergency management during the crisis.
