The fourth chapter, Every Border Is a Temptation: Navigating the Underground Railroad, addresses the various steps Sudanese migrants encounter on their journey northward. It focuses on the diverse practices migrants employ to move from one place to another, allowing for an investigation into the mechanisms and logic of border escapes. The chapter examines liminal zones such as the Franco-Italian border (Ventimiglia and the Montgenèvre alpine pass), the Mediterranean Sea and the English Channel, which reveal places where the underground railroad experiences forced stops and becomes visible. Additionally, various accounts related to the phenomenon of smuggling are discussed. Indeed, as state efforts to prevent illegal migration have increased, smuggling practices and organizations have significantly developed to circumvent these controls. For example, the case study of the Ventimiglia border demonstrates that the concept of moral economy often provides a more accurate explanation of the smuggling phenomena than business or criminal approaches.
