Use of wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductors in power converters enables superior efficiency, elevated power density, and advanced thermal capabilities. These collective advantages push the boundaries of performance, making WBG technology instrumental in modern power electronics systems. This chapter explores one such utilization of WBG technology, specifically SiC FETs, within a distinctive category of differential-mode rectifiers designed for a patented universal battery charger (UBS) application. This endeavor was undertaken as part of the ARPA-E-supported CIRCUITS program, which is dedicated to advancing future technologies. In this context, the chapter covers critical aspects, including the role of wide-bandgap semiconductors in UBS technology, addressing unique challenges and innovations in SiC UBS circuit designs, managing fast switching challenges, discussing metrics and trade-offs, and exploring the impact of UBS on low carbon and DER, along with future directions and commercialization prospects.

摘要
