This chapter describes the development of a state-of-the-art integrated motor drive (IMD) that incorporates all of the drive electronics inside the enclosure of the original machine. Major advances in the IMD power density and performance are achieved by adopting wide-bandgap (WBG) power semiconductor switches in a novel current-source inverter (CSI) configuration. The very high switching frequency of the WBG switches (125 kHz) makes it possible to significantly shrink the mass and volume of the CSI’s passive components. A 3 kW prototype version of the WBG-based IMD was successfully fabricated and tested. The test results demonstrated that all key performance targets established at the beginning of the project were achieved, providing a promising technology roadmap for future IMD development.
