This chapter aims to explore the conversion of power from low-voltage dc to medium-voltage ac at the utility scale. Traditionally, the conversion of dc to ac power involves the utilization of a sinusoidal pulse-width-modulation (PWM) inverter, necessitating the use of a bulky and inefficient filter to refine the waveform. When dealing with utility-scale ac voltages, additional challenges arise due to the availability of semiconductor devices and components. The fundamental concept explored in this chapter of utilizing a single dc source to generate high-voltage ac high-voltage is to employ a dc-dc converter to produce an isolated output, which is unfolded to a low-frequency ac and subsequently connected in series to the outputs of other converters to achieve high-voltage ac. The inverter with this series connection of low-frequency ac is commonly referred to as the cascaded multilevel inverter (CMLI). The CMLI inputs which are obtained from the dc-dc converter output would need to be isolated at least at the peak ac voltage level.

摘要
