Low-Cost Gate Driver IC for e-Mode GaN HEMTs in Variable Speed Drives for Appliance Motors

Motors in residential and commercial applications account for 9.6 quadrillion BTUs [1]—or 10%—of US energy used [2], and 40% of US demand for electricity (see Fig. 19.1). Most of these residential and commercial applications still use constant speed motors, which are very inefficient in converting electricity to useful work. By some estimates, the conversion to use of variable speed motor control can reduce energy consumption by as much as 40–60% [1] compared to fixed speed motors.
