Rewarding Loyalty in Smart Tourism Destinations: A New Participatory Solution

This conceptual paper explores the integration of blockchain technology and participatory governance to enhance loyalty programmes within smart tourism destinations (STDs). Through a comprehensive literature review on Smart Cities and Smart Tourism Destinations, the significance of citizen and stakeholder involvement in decision-making processes is highlighted. While blockchain technology has shown promise in advancing digitization and automation in STDs, loyalty programmes have traditionally lacked participation and direct connection to destinations. Drawing from secondary data on Brand Loyalty and insights from the literature, we propose a novel framework inspired by the sports context for designing new loyalty programmes in STDs, introducing the Destination Token. This framework aims to leverage stakeholder participation and blockchain technology to provide users with multifaceted experiences, including interactive activities, involvement in decision-making, and loyalty rewards. By integrating elements of fan engagement, the proposed framework seeks to foster a sense of community and enhance user engagement within smart tourist destinations.
