This chapter chronicles an established Wall Street corporate lawyer’s journey towards questioning the legal profession’s fitness for purpose in the modern age and committing to personal reinvention. Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence, synthetic biology, and other technologies present vast opportunities and implications for society, including legal professionals. The author argues that these provide lawyers an inflection point to examine their relevance and role in a rapidly changing world, and to adopt changes that would enhance their effectiveness in this new society. This would improve respect for the rule of law and its institutions. The author uses a storytelling motif to trace his path of discovery and renewal, from pandemic-induced reflection to active engagement with legal innovation communities and thought leaders. It offers lessons and recommendations for individual lawyers, in-house counsel, and law firms to adapt to the digital age and better serve clients and society.
