Legal Prompt Engineering (LPE) is a method of using generative AI, specifically Large Language Models (LLM), to effectively streamline time-intensive legal tasks and transform traditional legal workflows. The synergy between technology and humans allows the latter to focus on more complex legal nuances, strategy formation, client interactions, and tasks requiring a personal touch. This chapter points out that the skill of LPE will play an essential role in agile legal work environments in order to maintain competitiveness and uphold the rule of law. The discussion starts with an introduction to generative AI in legal services. The chapter then continues by presenting the (technical) fundamentals of LLMs and Prompt Engineering, followed by an exploration of appropriate techniques and specific legal requirements for lawyers. It provides real-world use cases and describes the risks of ‘inaccurate’ Prompt Engineering. The chapter concludes by highlighting important legal implications related to prompting. Legal consultants should take the initiative now and set the course for an innovative and future-oriented consulting practice.
