This chapter focuses upon the sorts of tools and instruments that may be useful in researching spirituality by seeking to answer the following key questions: What aspects of spirituality or spiritual care do these scales and instruments measure? Why is there a need to measure these aspects of spirituality? What do they contribute to understanding? How do these scales and measures assist researchers, educators and clinical practitioners? Consequently, this chapter has a more academic style and will be of particular interest to those conducting research in this field and educators seeking to develop awareness of the diverse attitudes that might be held about spirituality. Nevertheless, also instruments will be described that can be easily implemented in the clinical context to assess patients’ spiritual needs.
